Time Planner: Ground Zero
Whittier is the gateway to Prince William Sound. Ten thousand square miles of beautiful mountainous coastal wilderness.
Details:Take a drive through the Anton Memorial Tunnel to enter Whittier and you will step back in time to the cold war days of the 1950s. All the concrete buildings you see here were built in the 50s. These 60+ year old buildings are a testament to the engineering prowess of the US Army Corp of engineers. Whittier is home to the 10,000 year old Portage trail. This historic trail was actively used by Athabaskans during the timeframe the Wooly Mammoth was still roaming the interior of Alaska. The Portage trail allowed access to the rich abundance of the Prince William Sound region.
Whittier is the closest ice free port available to Anchorage.
